IANA understands that, upon approval of this document, there are two
actions IANA must complete.

At the time of approval of this document, IANA Department Staff will work with
the authors to do two tasks:

Identify and reserve a ff3x:0:8000/33 SSM block in the Source-Specific Multicast
block of the IPv6 Multicast Address Registry to embed an IPv4 multicast address
in the last 32 bits; and,

Identify and reserve a ffxx:8000/17 ASM block to embed an IPv4 multicast address
in the last 32 bits; IANA Department Staff will work to identify the proper
block for Any Source Multicast.

IANA understands that these are the only actions required upon approval of this document.

Subject: Last Call:  (IPv4-Embedded IPv6 Multicast Address Format) to Proposed Standard

The IESG has received a request from the MBONE Deployment WG (mboned) to

consider the following document:

- 'IPv4-Embedded IPv6 Multicast Address Format'

  as a Proposed

Standard

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits

final comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the

ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2012-05-02. Exceptionally, comments may be

sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the

beginning of the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

This document specifies an extension to the IPv6 multicast addressing

architecture to be used in the context of IPv4-IPv6 interconnection.

In particular, this document defines an address format for IPv4-

embedded IPv6 multicast addresses.  This address format can be used

for IPv4-IPv6 translation or encapsulation schemes.

  This document updates RFC4291.

Technical Summary

This document specifies an extension to the IPv6 multicast addressing
architecture to be used in the context of IPv4-IPv6 interconnection.
In particular, this document defines an address format for IPv4-
embedded IPv6 multicast addresses. This address format can be used
for IPv4-IPv6 translation or encapsulation schemes.

This document updates [RFC4291].

This specification can be used in conjunction with other extensions
such as building unicast prefix-based multicast IPv6 address
[RFC3306] or embedding the rendezvous point [RFC3956].

This document is a companion document to [RFC6052] which focuses
exclusively on IPv4-embedded IPv6 unicast addresses.

Working Group Summary

This draft has received solid support within the working group and no
major controversies were noted.

Document Quality

This document has received a number of comments from reviewers and the
authors addressed each of these comments. There exists at least one
implementation of this mechanism.

Personnel

Lenny Giuliano is the Document Shepherd. Ron Bonica is the
Responsible Area Director.

IANA Note

Authors of this document request to reserve:
o ff3x:0:8000/33 SSM block to embed an IPv4 multicast address in the
last 32 bits.
o ffxx:8000/17 ASM block to embed an IPv4 multicast address in the
last 32 bits.
