PROTO Write-up

1.a) The chairs have reviewed this version of the ID and
ask that the IESG consider it for publication.

1.b) This document has been sufficiently reviewed by the
working group. Sam Harman, the Security AD, has also
reviewed the ID. His comments are incorporated in this
version of the AD.

1.c) The chairs do not believe further cross-area review
is needed. Jon Peterson, Transport AD contributed
substantively to discussions around the semantics and
security of the information this protocol is meant to
convey. Also, as already mentioned, Sam Hartman has
reviewed the ID.

1.d) This ID was originally part of MSRP base document. It was
split off, by WG concesus, for 3 reasons:
- Some implementors felt that they do not need to implement
such functionallity and therefore does not need to
in the base spec.
- There are security considerations when implementing relays that
don't directly affect implementations of the endpoints defined
in the base MSRP draft.
- 3GPP has a dependacy on MSRP Base but not the Relay draft.

1.e) This document reflects a strong consensus position from
the working group. The working group has been working on this
draft for years and have arrived at this after several re-starts.

1.f) There have been no indications of intent to appeal.

1.g) This document adheres to ID-nits.

1.h) The document appropriately splits references into
Informative/Normative.

Technical Summary

There are two separate models for conveying
instant messages. Page-mode messages stand alone and are not part
of a session, whereas Session-mode messages are set up as part of a
session using the SIP protocol.

MSRP (Message Sessions Relay Protocol) is a protocol for near-real-
time, peer-to-peer exchanges of binary content without
intermediaries, which is designed to be signaled using a separate
rendezvous protocol such as SIP. This document introduces the notion
of message relay intermediaries to MSRP and describes the extensions
necessary to use them. The extension allows the operation through an
arbitrary number of relays for policy enforcement.

Working Group Summary

This document reflects WG consensus. It defines the Message Session
Relay Protocol (MSRP) extension. It allows the operation through
an arbitrary number of relays for policy enforcement.

This ID was originally part of MSRP base document. It was
split off, by WG concesus, for 2 reasons:
- Some implementors felt that they do not need to implement
such functionallity and therefore does not need to
in the bas spec.
- There are security considerations when implementing relays that
don't directly affect implementations of the endpoints defined
in the base MSRP draft.
