The following approval message was sent
From: The IESG

Cc: The IESG , ,
Subject: Results of IETF-conflict review for draft-manning-opcode-discover-06

The IESG has completed a review of draft-manning-opcode-discover-06
consistent with RFC5742.

The IESG has no problem with the publication of 'DISCOVER: Supporting
Multicast DNS Queries'  as an
Historic RFC.

The IESG has concluded that this work is related to IETF work done in WG
dnsext, but this relationship does not prevent publishing.

The IESG would also like the RFC-Editor to review the comments in the
datatracker related to this document and determine whether or not they
merit incorporation into the document. Comments may exist in both the
ballot and the history log.

The IESG review is documented at:
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/conflict-review-manning-opcode-discover/

A URL of the reviewed Internet Draft is:

The process for such documents is described at

Thank you,

The IESG Secretary

This is a discuss discuss which I anticipate clearing on or by the call.

It is hard to figure this out without the diff tool working, but the original document was DNP by the IESG of the day and it is not clear whether or not the reasons for that are fully articulated, and whether there is any remaining residual risk in publication.

This Comment is provided for consideration by the ISE and author.

It would be helpful if the Abstract, as well as noting that the
experiment was run in the 90s, also noted the how/why of this being a
historic record, not an on-going experiment. Stating this in terms of
the purpose of the document (as the last paragraph of Section 1) might
be a good way to do it.

The draft draft-manning-opcode-discover-06.txt
is ready for publication from the Independent Stream.
Please ask IESG to review it, as set out in RFC 5742.

The following is some background for this draft, please forward it
to IESG along with this request ...

Bill Manning originally submitted this draft back in 2004.
It ran into problems into 2011, resulting in the IESG note
for it in the Tracker.

After discussions with me in November 2011, Bill has rewritten
it as a Historical draft, documenting a DARPA (i.e. non-IETF)
multicast-DNS project from the mid-90s. With that in mind,
it uses that project's final report to provide background
information. It does not request any IANA codepoints.

Thanks, Nevil (ISE)
